Advantages of the MuCell®

Foam injection molding

The MuCell® technology can not only reduce the weight of a component – it is also able to optimize its properties. Compared to other injection molding techniques, the result is particularly low-distortion, precisely manufactured and almost free of sink marks and cavities. In addition, injection molding using MuCell® opens up new design options thanks to the lower viscosity of the molten plastic.

  • Lower manufacturing costs
  • Improved CO2 balance
  • Lower energy consumption due to lower injection pressure and cooling time
  • Shorter cycle times
  • Greatly improved quality of molded parts
  • Lower weight of the components
  • Low-stress molded parts

MuCell® – this is how foam injection molding works

MuCell® is a process for the physical foaming of thermoplastics, which was originally developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is now distributed by the company Trexel. In the course of the process, the plastic melt is enriched with gas in injection units, resulting in a homogeneous compound. When injected into the mold, the gas expands and forms a fine, microcellular cell structure within the plastic components.

Mucell Schaumspritzgießen

Reduction of the viscosity of the plastic melt by controlled injection of blowing agent (N2 or CO2)

Physikalisches Schäumen Spritzguss

Build-up of a foamed cell structure in the component due to the expansion of the injected gas into the cavity

Mucell Verfahren Spritzgussteile

The result is filigree molded parts with wall thicknesses of less than 1 mm, without sacrificing quality or stability. This makes it possible to save between 6 and 15 percent on the weight of the components.

Buck brings your idea into shape – with MuCell® foam injection molding

Today, MuCell® injection molding is used in a wide variety of applications. In the age of lightweight construction and the like, the automotive industry, the electrical industry and the aerospace industry in particular rely on the "heavyweight" among modern processes: MuCell® technology. Why? Because, especially in these areas, highly precisely manufactured, lightweight or low-distortion components are required that offer the best possible load-bearing capacity. In order for you to be able to take advantage of all the advantages of MuCell® injection molding, basic know-how about the process is required.

And this is where Buck Spritzgussteile Formenbau GmbH comes into play:

  • We are constantly investing – both in our equipment and in the know-how of our experts
  • Our designers provide support in the development of components that are compatible with MuCell®
  • Our team monitors and documents all quality assurance measures based on TS16949

MuCell® in a nutshell

Efficiency

MuCell® foam injection molding is first and foremost a cost-effective alternative to traditional processes. By using less material per part, shorter cycle times (thanks to the elimination of the holding pressure time) and a lower mold temperature, we are able to make the production of your component more effective.

Sustainability

Foaming creates a homogeneous pressure profile throughout the component. The level of this injection pressure is usually lower than with conventional injection molding. Therefore, MuCell® injection molding reduces the energy consumption of the injection molding machines. The process also enables the environmentally friendly recycling of components and reduces the CO2 balance.

Quality

The reduced viscosity of the plastic melt and the associated longer flow paths provide undreamt-of freedom in terms of design. The foam structure resulting from MuCell® foam injection molding also significantly improves the quality of the components: they are not only lighter, but also less stressful and have fewer cavities.
